The mist-shrouded forests of Uttarakhand hold secrets that many trekkers pass by too quickly, especially the solitary companionship of birds. Quietly reclining between the oak-laden slopes of Lohajung and the fabled alpine stretches of Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve lies a less rushed, more observed world. The joy is not in summiting peaks but in pausing mid-trail as a Himalayan Monal flutters into eyesight or listening to the unseen chatter of bush warblers.

Unlike popular treks, this trail meanders through thickets of silver birch and ancient deodar, past villages where the rhythm of life is still dictated by the sun and rain. Birdwatching becomes a practice in patience and presence. Add to this the stories of forest dwellers, hand-ground buckwheat rotis, and long silences broken only by woodpeckers.

Highlights of the Tour:

A Six-Day Itinerary for the Tour

Day 1: Kathgodam - Lohajung

Distance: 210 km

Arrive early in the morning at Kathgodam Railway Station, the primary railway station in Dehradun, the Capital of Uttarakhand.

From here, a long but scenic drive through forested ridges and hill towns takes you all the way up to Lohajung (7600 ft), a quiet settlement that serves as a base for many alpine treks.

Expect a full view of the snow-draped Trishul peak on a cloudless day. Post lunch, take a short walk to the nearby village of Didina. Keep your binoculars handy for Grey Bushchats and Blue-capped Redstarts that are common around this belt.

Wake up early for a slow forest walk led by a naturalist from the region. Wander through mixed oak and rhododendron woods, where the undergrowth teems with Indian Paradise Flycatchers darting through the canopy and the elusive Woodpeckers tapping along fallen trunks.

Spend your afternoon in the village: join a local family in gathering wild herbs, learn to cook rotis (Indian flatbread) over a mud chulha (makeshift fireplace), or help in the fields.

Distance: 8 km

Set off for a slow-paced hike to Wan village, passing through thick forests and quiet meadows. The trail is abundant with avian life, only remember to keep an ear out for the haunting call of the Whistling Thrush.

Overnight stay at a family-run homestay in Wan gives you a simple but warm welcome, with mountain herbal teas and stories of the Van Gujjars, the nomadic forest people.

Lohajung - Wan

A small drive away from Wan is the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve. Lata, the getaway to Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, is a sleepy mountain village where the Chipko movement to protest against cutting of trees, found its roots. Meet the local Bhotiya families, who will surprise you with their resilience and deep ecological knowledge.

Stay in a community-run homestay to support the local Garhwali families. Feel free to join a local elder for a walk into the peripheries of the Biosphere Reserve and learn about high-altitude herbs and the terrain’s biodiversity.

Duration: Full-day hike

Altitude: 3700 m

This day is for the forest hike. Gear up to hike toward Lata Kharak, a ridge that offers spectacular glimpses of the Nanda Devi peak. The trail is steep but rewarding, and your guide will help identify birds and rare flora along the way. Return by dusk to Lata village for a quiet Garhwali night and a simple home-cooked meal.

Nanda Devi

Bid farewell to your hosts and start the long drive back to Kathgodam. Depending on time, stop midway at a roadside Garhwali dhaba (local eatery) for a plate of steaming rajma-chawal (red kidney bean curry and rice).

March to May is the best time for bird watching and blooming rhododendrons. And October to November brings crisp air, golden forests, and high visibility, which is perfect for nature walks and clear views.
