Long before it was just a scattering of carved stone and crumbling grandeur, Hampi was the beating heart of the Vijayanagara Empire, a powerful South Indian kingdom that flourished from the 14th to the 17th century. They took pride in their grand architecture, thriving trade, and resistance against northern invasions, with their capital at Hampi. Temple gopurams (ornate monumental towers) rose between giant boulders like fossilized prayers, and open-air bazaars lay in dignified decay under the watch of Gods carved in granite.
This is not a place to rush through. The rhythm of Hampi is slow and languid, walking through the long corridors of pillared mandapas (religious hall), watching the orange sunset glow behind the Virupaksha temple spire, and catching echoes of Sanskrit verses carved in stone. Time has stood still in Hampi for centuries.
On one side of the river, it’s a flatland of ancient ruins and boulders. Then across the water, the landscape transforms into green paddy fields and palm groves, a contrast to the harsh, stony terrain.
Highlights of the Tour:
- Walk through the Virupaksha Temple complex, still functional after 1300 years of worship
- Discover the musical pillars of Vittala Temple, known for its stone chariot and ornate sculptures
- Climb Matanga Hill for a gorgeous view of the ruins at sunrise
- Explore the royal enclosures: Lotus Mahal, Queen’s Bath, and the Elephant Stables
- Roam around the old market streets of Hampi Bazaar, where horses were once sold beside gemstones
A Four-Day Itinerary of the Ruins of Hampi
Day 1: Hospet - Hampi Bazaar - Virupaksha Temple
Distance: 13 km
Transportation: Auto-rickshaw or rental bicycle (Bicycling is very common among the tourists)
As soon as you arrive in Hospet, take a short ride to Hampi village, only 13 km away. Spend the afternoon exploring the Virupaksha Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva; the only functioning temple amid the ruins, still resonating with nostalgic chants and temple bells. Take your time to observe the frescoes on the ceiling of the Ranga Mandapa (hall) and the elephant with Lakshmi (a goddess), a symbol of blessing.
In the evening, take a long slow walk along the Tungabhadra River, and take in the surroundings of ancient ghats (riverfront steps) and beautiful carvings.
Sunset at Hemakuta Hill is a gentle reminder of the majestic surrealism of the boulder-landscape of Hampi.
Day 2: Vittala Temple Complex - Riverside Ruins
Transportation: Rent a bicycle or hire an auto for the day.
The Vittala Temple complex, home to the world-famous stone chariot and musical pillars (though you can no longer tap them), epitomizes the zenith of Vijayanagara architecture. The temple is laid out in intricate symmetry, with mandapas (halls) depicting temple dancers and scenes from the epics Ramayana and Mahabharat.
Post-lunch, you can follow the riverside trail from Vittala back to Hampi Bazaar. This route takes you through forgotten carvings, giant Shiva lingas (symbol of the Hindu God Shiva), and ruins only accessible on foot.
If you have time and energy on your hands, you may look for the hidden Kodandarama Temple sculpted into a rock face.
Day 3: Royal Enclosure - Zenana Enclosure - Elephant Stables
You can start this day with the Royal Enclosure, a sprawling, open-air palace where the King once held court. On this day, you will step onto the underground chamber, stepwells, and Mahanavami Dibba, an elevated platform for regal festivities.
Then walk or take a tuk-tuk to the Zenana Enclosure, for the ethereal Lotus Palace with its Islamic-Dravidian fusion architecture and the arched Elephant Stables nearby.
If you are still up for an evening adventure, cross over to Anegundi by coracle (traditional round boats) and enjoy the quiet charm of the village across the river. Coracle boats, round, woven baskets coated with tar, were once used for daily crossings and trade, and now tourists can also ride these traditional boats on the Tungabhadra River.
Day 4: Matanga Hill - Anjaneya Hill
Wake up before the sun and trek up Matanga Hill, arguably the best spot for an incredible sunrise in Hampi over a landscape of boulders and temples in golden hues.
Afterwards, you may visit Anjaneya Hill, the birthplace of Lord Hanuman. The climb is a series of steep stairs but rewarding, with sweeping views and a whitewashed temple on the top.
Return to your stay for a leisurely breakfast before heading back to Hospet for your onward journey.
Best Time to Visit Hampi
October to February is the best time to visit Hampi, for the most pleasant weather for temple exploration, sunrises, and long walks through the ruins. Be sure to avoid peak summers when the boulders radiate heat like suntraps. It can be rather exhausting to explore Hampi around that time.
